The mission of the West Virginia Center of Employee Ownership (WVCEO) is to preserve jobs in WV by expanding employee ownership through education and outreach to business owners throughout WV.

About

The West Virginia Center for Employee Ownership (\”WVCEO\”) was created in 2024 to help promote employee ownership in WV through outreach and education. Located in the University of Charleston downtown Innovation Hub, the WVCEO is the 15th state center in the Employee Ownership Expansion Network (\”EOX\”) and the 23rd state center created in the U.S. The WVCEO is a 501(c)3 organization that serves as the central hub for information and resources regarding employee ownership in WV. WVCEO\’s mission is to educate business owners and their advisors (lawyers, bankers, accountants, wealth advisors) on the benefits of employee ownership via Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), worker cooperatives, and Employee Ownership Trusts (EOTs), by providing consultations, webinars, seminars, case studies, and articles, as well as a list of service providers who can assist with employee ownership transitions. WVCEO\’s primary goal is to maintain jobs in WV by growing the number of employee-owned businesses. Tim Gibbons, Executive Director the the WVCEO, recognizes that many business owners in WV are nearing retirement age and will be looking to transition their businesses over the next several years. Selling a business to employees can be an excellent strategy for retiring business owners who want to see their companies continue to operate in  WV after they retire. In addition to preserving jobs in WV, employee ownership can help attract and retain good employees, provide tax benefits to the selling owner(s) and employee-owned company, improve company performance, and enable employees to build wealth over time.
